Beyond the Clubhouse doors, the stage is set for outdoor activities. Highlighted by golf, there are two unsurpassed 18-hole courses, the Heron and the Eagle. Both are meticulously maintained and each provides different challenges to those who play them. A complete renovation of the Eagle course has begun in April 2006 and will feature an Arthur Hills design and the installation of "Paspalum Supreme", which is the finest variety of this warm weather grass. A team of golf professionals stands ready to assist members in perfecting their game, while accessories abound in the on-site pro shop. Additionally, there are 12 Har-Tru tennis courts, an outstanding tennis program, and a tennis pavilion that houses a well-stocked pro shop. An outdoor, over-sized pool provides a comfortable setting for relaxation. A regulation croquet court is landscaped with a hedge of greens and trees of roses.
Amidst the warm gentle breezes, if you desire privacy, it is yours. If you want to participate in club events, you will be welcomed to a myriad of options. Organized sporting activities, a Women's Club, a Men's Club, bridge, gardening, art, and literary groups are here. Special social events and dinner-dances occur on a regular basis. Family activities reflect a commitment to those with children to feel involved in the community.
History tells us that Mrs. Potter Palmer of Chicago particularly enjoyed this area, and in the early 1900s purchased nearly a quarter of what is now Sarasota County. Historic Spanish Point, on 29 acres adjoining Little Sarasota Bay, is where she had planned to build her home, to be named, "The Oaks."
Today, Historic Spanish Point in Osprey, bordering Oaks Bayside, presents a rich history of Florida life in earlier times, and allows its neighbors to learn more about the local flora and fauna. Given the location of The Oaks, access to Gulf Beaches is easy. The city of Sarasota, which we border to the north, is known for its cultural events, from the opera, ballet, theater, symphony, and annual film festival to performances by national and international celebrities at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center. The Selby Botanical Gardens, Ringling Museum, Mote Marine, and St. Armand's Circle are favorite tourist attractions. In an hour, you can be in Tampa; in two hours, Orlando, where Disney attractions are ongoing and fun-filled. The Oaks has easy access to Interstate 75, which runs north and south along the Gulf Coast, linking the area with Naples, further south, and Ft. Lauderdale and Miami on the east coast. Sarasota/Bradenton Airport is 15 miles away, and Tampa International Airport is approximately one hour away. The Oaks also has its own registered helipad located on the grounds.
The Oaks Board of Governors, elected by the membership, provides the leadership to keep The Oaks Club financially solvent, beautifully maintained, and a joy to partake. The Board invites you to this haven in the sun.
